Quick answer: use the cream, maximum fill level, charger type and charger quantity specified for your dispenser. Assemble, charge, shake and dispense according to its manual. Before opening, follow its pressure-release procedure and confirm release; a blocked nozzle can trap pressure.

What you need
- A whipped cream dispenser: a bottle, a head with a gasket and valve, a charger holder and decorating tips.
- The N2O cream chargers approved for your dispenser. A tank system requires explicit dispenser compatibility plus the correct regulator and adapter; a matching thread alone does not establish compatibility.
- Cold heavy cream or heavy whipping cream with at least 30% fat; see heavy cream vs whipping cream.
- Powdered sugar and vanilla or other flavorings (optional).

Step by step
- Chill. Use cream straight from the fridge. A cold dispenser helps too.
- Fill. Prepare and strain the mixture as your dispenser instructions require, dissolving any powdered ingredients before filling. Never exceed the maximum fill line.
- Close. Check that the gasket sits flat inside the head, then screw the head on firmly and straight.
- Fit a tip. Screw a decorating tip onto the nozzle.
- Charge. Use the charger type and maximum quantity specified for your model. Do not add an extra charger to fix a poor result.
- Shake. Follow the shaking instructions for your exact model and recipe.
- Test. Dispense a small amount using the position and method specified in the manual. If it is runny, check the ingredient, fill and shaking instructions before proceeding. Do not add another charger to compensate.
- Dispense. Keep it upside down and press gently for a steady swirl.
How many chargers to use
- 250 ml (half-pint) dispenser: check its own manual; do not infer the permitted dose from bottle size.
- iSi Cream Profi Whip, 0.5 L: its manual specifies one original iSi cream charger.
- iSi Cream Profi Whip, 1 L: the same manual specifies two original iSi cream chargers. These examples are not instructions for other dispensers.

Whipped cream dispenser not working: troubleshooting
- Runny cream: check that the cream is suitable for whipping, properly chilled and within the fill limit. Follow the model’s shaking instructions rather than repeatedly shaking or adding more gas.
- Too stiff or lumpy: over-shaking or an unsuitable mixture can affect flow. Do not force a thick mixture through a blocked nozzle or open a pressurized bottle. Follow the model’s troubleshooting instructions; see soft peaks vs stiff peaks for cream texture.
- Only gas comes out: hold the dispenser upside down so the cream covers the valve.
- Nothing comes out: a blockage may prevent pressure release. Never unscrew the head, probe the valve or add another charger. Follow the manufacturer’s pressure-release procedure; if pressure will not release, contact its service center.
- Gas leaks from the head: stop using the dispenser and follow its manufacturer’s instructions. Inspect the gasket only after confirmed pressure release; if release cannot be confirmed, contact the service center.
How to clean a whipped cream dispenser
- Confirm pressure release first. Follow your model’s pressure-release procedure. No flow from the nozzle does not prove the bottle is depressurized: a blockage can trap pressure. Never unscrew the head unless pressure release is confirmed; if it cannot be confirmed, contact the manufacturer or its service center.
- After confirmed pressure release, follow your exact model’s disassembly instructions. Remove only the components its manual identifies as removable for cleaning; do not assume every valve can be taken apart.
- Use the cleaning method and products approved in your model’s manual. Clean the permitted removable parts and passages with the specified brush; do not use abrasive tools or assume every component is dishwasher-safe.
- Follow the manufacturer’s drying, reassembly and storage instructions. Check the model’s parts list before replacing a worn gasket, tip or charger holder; see the exact-model replacement-parts checklist.
- Throw away used chargers responsibly; see how to dispose of cream chargers.
Storing whipped cream in the dispenser
Keep a filled dispenser refrigerated within its manufacturer’s temperature limits. Follow its instructions for shaking; do not automatically shake it again before every serving. See how long whipped cream lasts.
What else can you make?
Flavored toppings (whipped cream dispenser recipes), cold foam for iced coffee, mousse, and savory espuma. For why dispensers use nitrous oxide, see why nitrous oxide is used for whipped cream. Need a small dispenser? Try our 250 ml mini whipped cream dispenser.
Safety: nitrous oxide is sold for food and drink preparation only. Never inhale it: inhaling nitrous oxide can cause serious injury or death. Cylinders are under high pressure and escaping gas is extremely cold, so keep them away from heat, children and pets.
Model-specific reference: the iSi Cream Profi Whip manual explains charger limits and blocked pressure release. Use the manual for your own dispenser rather than transferring these limits to another brand.
Cleaning reference: iSi’s Cream Profi Whip cleaning guide specifies that model’s removable head valve and gasket, non-abrasive cleaning and air-drying. Its dishwasher instructions exclude the charger holder. Those instructions apply to that model; use your own dispenser’s manual for permitted disassembly and cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
How many chargers does a whipped cream dispenser need?
Use the type and maximum number specified in your model’s manual. For example, the iSi Cream Profi Whip manual specifies one original iSi cream charger for its 0.5 L model and two for its 1 L model. These limits do not establish compatibility or dosage for other dispensers.
How long do you shake a whipped cream dispenser?
Follow your model’s instructions, then check the first serving. Avoid repeated shaking after the cream reaches the right consistency; over-shaking can make it too stiff.
Why does my whipped cream dispenser only spray gas?
Check the dispensing position specified in your model’s manual. If the problem continues, follow its troubleshooting instructions; sputtering alone does not prove the bottle is empty. Do not add another charger or open the head while pressure may remain.
Can I put a whipped cream dispenser in the dishwasher?
Only clean the components by the methods approved in your exact model’s manual, after confirmed pressure release. Dishwasher approval may differ between the bottle, head, charger holder and other parts. If the instructions are unavailable, ask the manufacturer before cleaning or disassembly.
